Synopsis of the Colombian Stag Beetles: A baseline for conservation assessments

Stag beetles, or Lucanidae (Insecta: Coleoptera: Scarabaeoidea), are among the most charismatic groups of scarab beetles. However, their ecology and natural history largely unknown, partly due to rarity in field biological collections. This contribution summarizes status knowledge Colombian Lucanidae, based for part bibliographic research personal observations from fieldwork collections Colombia Brazil. Bibliographic records supplemented by data Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), including recorded through online platform iNaturalist. In literature, we found 19 species stag beetles Colombia, belonging five genera, three tribes, two subfamilies. concentrated Andean region with some Caribbean Pacific regions. The lowlands Amazon Orinoco regions lack any lucanid diversity discussed light current environmental threats. By presenting diagnoses an identification key genera present country, along known distributional data, a discussion about ecology, this constitutes first step towards proposing lucanids as need conservation efforts.
